DSF role search improvements

Role Search — default view

Context

Services: Interaction design · UX research · A/B testing · Iterative design · Component design

  • Drove a phased approach to improving data discovery informed by user feedback — Phase 1 introduced filtering by data ownership and eligibility; Phase 2 expanded to security attribute and policy annotation search
  • Addressed key user pain points around overwhelming role volume and unclear descriptions by introducing intuitive filtering that simplified the search experience
  • Helped reduce operational overhead related to data access requests by streamlining search, approval, and policy management workflows

My contributions

Iterative design

Led design across five concurrent workstreams — approval workflows, impact analysis, security attribute filtering, pending role states, and broad-access roles — refining each through user feedback sessions.

Research & A/B testing

Partnered with UXR to A/B test security attribute filtering approaches, which informed the design and implementation of an improved split-panel component.

Workflow & access design

Designed approval workflow and impact analysis experiences so users and approvers could understand role sensitivity and the consequences of access changes before acting.

Platform expansion

Led design for API resource registration and permission-based filtering, expanding how users discover and manage access to data.

Summary of work

This work aims to enhance data discovery for DSF users by enabling them to easily find necessary data (e.g., by role) and create custom annotations for roles, slices, resource registrations, and configurations. Additionally, it seeks to improve the DSF role search functionality by allowing users to search based on associated security attributes and data filters, and to provide a more user-friendly search experience utilizing filters supported by role histogram data. A smaller objective is to identify highly desired features for improved data access and request workflows.

Because this work was on internal Google tools, I can't post screenshots publicly. The linked doc walks through the full problem space, process, and outcomes for all three DSF projects.
