The team at Feathr needed to update the design of their site to appeal to a wider audience. They wanted to simplify the delivery of information and highlight key features with something that was both easy to digest and navigate, as well as modern and inviting. They wanted to step away from the business-heavy look of their competitors and of the previous iterations of their own site.
Problem: Feathr approached me to help them redesign their website to help market their services to a wider audience.
Process: Testing found that users felt Feathr's message was directed towards industry 'insiders' and therefore their service wasn't for them. The company wanted to convey more of a friendly, approachable feel as they moved towards messaging that was more inclusive. I helped them to unify their site's color scheme, going with a primary palette of soft blues and a secondary scheme of bright, friendly colors to keep the feeling approachable. I updated their product illustrations to give them a more modern look, and also updated the typography treatments and imagery for the site.
I designed screens for a fitness app for a pitch to Zumba. The app created a social community for both students and instructors, as well as a hub for the company's merchandise store and digital content.
Problem: The client approached us with a need to refresh the look and feel of their fitness app in addition to adding functionality to create a more robust user experience.
Process: Our team immediately signed up for Zumba classes and started talking to participants and instructors to get a feel for what they would want to see in a revised version of the app. We asked where pain points existed with the current app and what gaps they felt were present. We heard a few things repeated over and over; users didn't have a lot of use for the app and didn't feel a need to use it on a regular basis. We wanted to create entry points to the app so the experience could be more consistent.
We began exploring several different directions from a functionality standpoint (instructor profiles, playlists, class checkin capability, and a more in-depth shopping experience) until we came up with solutions we felt both addressed the client's needs as well as the users' wants. Previous versions of the app had been difficult to navigate, so a simple structure and navigation pattern was a key element in our redesign.
The visual approach incorporated styles from the client's current website while introducing a more bold, colorful, fun aesthetic. We wanted to guide the user through the app while maintaining the fun, playful atmosphere they experience in their Zumba classes.
We started exploring navigation structures that felt appropriate for such a varied audience (the target age range was 22 to 56) and ran into a few dead ends before landing on a solution. A persistent button in the bottom right of the screen was both distracting and an unfamiliar pattern for too many users, so we went through a few iterations before finally deciding to use a hamburger icon in the top top-left of the screen that leads to a full-screen menu.
There is a tendency for many apps in this sector is to overload the user with options, so we stuck with a simple interface that allows for intuitive movement by swiping through screens and utilizing a single-point menu in the top left of the app. We also created several user flows that were close-ended, leaving the navigation structure with only two tiers. This allowed the user to avoid areas of the app they felt were 'hidden' or 'dead ends,' which were pain points identified in our research.
Results: The client was thrilled, and initial user testing resulted in positive reactions to the new interface. One user referred to the app experience as being "simple and exciting to use," and many mentioned the simplified navigation as their favorite part of the refresh.
Android App + iOS App + Responsive website
I designed the screens for the Android version of Kum & Go's &Rewards Loyalty app, as well as some of the responsive web flows. The app functions as an access point for customers to sign up for the rewards program, manage and redeem their earned rewards, and to view and select exclusive offers they can use to receive discounts in any Kum & Go store.
Problem: The client needed an app to manage their rewards program. The current program didn't provide the user with a clear overview of which types of rewards they are earning and how many points they have earned towards each reward. The app needed to allow them to choose rewards, manage rewards, and to view their progress towards their reward.
Solution: Our team developed a simple and straightforward interface with a powerful backend. Users were able to choose rewards, track their progress towards their rewards, and to receive exclusive offers through an intuitive and refined interface. Meanwhile, the client was able to promote products, share marketing messages and campaigns, and to analyze the purchasing habits and behaviors of their customers.
